Emergency Services
Physicians specially trained in adult and pediatric emergency medicine are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week and have earned the highest patient satisfaction ratings in the area, according to Arbor Associates Inc.
Our emergency team is equipped with advanced diagnostic technology to help them diagnose and treat patients quickly and compassionately. Our patient-to-caregiver ratio is low, ensuring personal attention and quick service. Special treatment rooms are available for procedures that require specific technology. Designated rooms are also available for treating women’s health and pediatric patients.
Convenient Location and Hours
ZCH is located just off M-21 and Business I-196. Enter via the main entrance and follow the signs to “Emergency”. There is ample parking located adjacent to the entrance.
Prompt Service
We provide care to patients of all ages with all types of problems, from life-threatening emergencies to moderately-severe illnesses. Our quick "door to doc" time means you're being seen by a provider shortly after arriving.
Qualified Staff
Our emergency physicians are trained in Emergency Medicine, and many are also on staff at Spectrum Health. Physician assistants, nurse practitioners and registered nurses are certified in emergency pediatric care, trauma care and advanced life support.
Connections in Care
ZCH is a member of the Spectrum Health Regional Hospital Network. In the rare event that a higher level of care is required, our staff can quickly prepare patients for transport to Spectrum Health, Meijer Heart Center or DeVos Children’s Hospital, as well as other local facilities.
Prescriptions
If you need a prescription during your visit, many can be filled before you leave with our InstyMeds™ automated medication dispenser.
Goals of Treatment
When you are in the Emergency Department, providers will focus on evaluating and treating conditions that are serious and need immediate treatment.
Discharge
Once testing and treatment are complete, the physician may determine that you can be sent home. If you are discharged, you will be given written instructions for care at home, including:
- If and when you need to follow-up with your primary care physician or return to the Emergency Department
- Referral to a physician, if you do not have one
- Referral to a specialist, if necessary
A copy of your record will automatically be sent to your primary care physician.
Observation/Hospitalization
Some patients may need to be admitted for additional tests and treatment. Admission status is based on certain criteria. There are several types of admission:
- Inpatient: Most often you will meet criteria for inpatient admission. However you may be admitted for observation.
- Observation: This allows for additional testing and monitoring for up to 48 hours. Your nurse can provide you with additional information.
ZCH Works to Expedite Heart Attack Care
In 2008, ZCH began a formal collaboration with Spectrum Health's Meijer Heart Center to ensure the fastest delivery of care for patients experiencing the most critical type of heart attack. Called the STEMI (ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction) Alert Process, the goal of the collaboration is to have critical heart attack patients stabilized at Spectrum Health’s Meijer Heart Center and receiving a cardiac catheterization within 90 minutes of the patient’s arrival at ZCH. As other hospitals begin a similar collaboration with Spectrum Health, ZCH is often used as the example of great STEMI care because we are exceeding expectations with this program.
