Endocrinology
Endocrinology is a sub-specialty within the field of internal medicine. It is involved in the diagnosis, treatment and care of the endocrine system. Many patients and their families are touched by conditions that require the expertise of an experienced endocrinologist. Dr. Philip Tate serves as Medical Director of The Diabetes Center where he will provide medical consultations for diabetes as well as other endocrine disorders including osteoporosis, thyroid cancer and diseases, cholesterol disorders and pituitary dysfunction.
What is Endocrinology?
The complex group of glands that make up the endocrine system includes the thyroid, parathyroid, adrenals, ovaries, testes, pancreas and hypothalamus. These glands produce hormones (or chemical agents) that travel through the blood and control bodily processes, such as metabolism, reproduction, development and growth. Included in the study of endocrinology are:
- Disease of diabetes
- Disease of the thyroid
- Diseases of adrenal and pituitary glands
- Cholesterol disorders
- Hypertension
- Osteoporosis
- Hormonal disorders that can cause infertility
- Low blood sugar
- Lack of development
- Low blood pressure
- Weight problems
